Abstract
Pulmonary mucormycosis occurrs primarily in patients with severe underlying illness,
especially leukemia, lymphoma, and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus.
Pulmonary mucormycosis does uncommonly occur in the nonimmunocompromised host.
Antemortem diagnosis has been made infrequently in pulmonary mucormycosis
because of the acute course of the illness, lack of consideration of the diagnosis, and the
need for tissue to establish the diagnosis.
This 54-year old female patient with pulmonary infiltrates was neither
immunocompromised nor neutropenic. Our case is noteworthy because pneumonia
occurred without obvious predisposing factors.
As this case demonstrates, the absense of obvious predisposing factors does not rule
out the possibility of pulmonary mucormycosis.
